In the New Testament, there is no record of a sinner being saved by prayer alone. When the church of Christ began, sinful Jews asked, “what shall we do?” Peter told them to, “Repent and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins” (Acts 2:38). The first Gentile sinner, Cornelius, was praying, but was told to send for Peter to tell him saving words (Acts 10:30; 11:14). Peter “commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord” (Acts 10:48). Saul of Tarsus saw Jesus, Who sent him into Damascus where he prayed, and was told to “be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord” (Acts 22:16).
