Baptism for The Dead (I Corinthians 15:29)

Question: I have a friend who is an ex Church of God pastor. He asked me to get your thoughts on 1 Corinthians 15:29, I believe this passage Mormons cite for being baptized for your ancestors.

I hold that this verse is referring to some who were being baptised for dead people. Paul's referral to them is to pose the question, if there is no resurrection, why are they being baptised for the dead.

He is not suggesting it is something that should be done, because he has already established that baptism follows faith repentance and confession of Christ as the Son of God. Just asking why some are doing it.
